Engage Communication Helps Light Rail Network Migrate from SONET to 10G Ethernet Connectivity
Aptos, CA – April 3, 2014

Engage Communication, a leading provider of specialized solutions that connect, protect and secure communication networks, helps municipal transit authority convert passenger station to operation center network infrastructure from SONET fiber rings to 10 Gigabit Ethernet transport.

Faced with an aging SONET network, equipment end of life concerns, and the need to more effectively transport voice, video and data; the transit authority of a major city decided to change its light rail communications network infrastructure to 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This ambitious 50 “plus” station project included the planned replacement of all rail station and operation center circuit based equipment with native IP / packet gear.

After upgrading more than 10 stations, the transit authority found the complexity and time associated with a full scale replacement of existing circuit based equipment was putting the project timeline and budget at risk. A detailed analysis was performed and decision made to adopt a migration strategy where the circuit outputs of existing equipment would connect to the 10 Gig network via circuit to packet converters. This greatly reduced the complexity of simultaneously transitioning all equipment and network infrastructure to IP, and addressed the associated time, cost and training concerns introduced by the initial approach.

Once the new migration strategy was approved, the transit authority conducted an exhaustive analysis of circuit to packet converter vendors and solutions.  At the top of the list, the Engage Communication IPTube product family. “Our broad array of circuit to packet interfaces (T1/E1, T3/E3, Serial and 4-wire), remote and central site chassis configurations, 15 years of circuit to packet expertise, and products designed and built in the U.S., make Engage a perfect fit for this application,” said Mark Doyle, Engage President and CEO.

With the implementation well underway, multiple SONET rings replaced, and the Engage IP Tube in production across the network; the migration project has gone smoothly with no issues encountered. The availability and level of expertise of Engage personnel, and the quality, ease of use and simplicity of deploying the IP Tube have been instrumental in the success of this new phased deployment strategy.
